as far as the winds went, these were the peak winds in the big cities. that's why we have so many downed trees in the suburbs. even higher than this in the 70 mile per hour range. long island had the highest gusts. islip at 90. one of the highest ones we've seen. it's still a breezy, windy morning. not even half as bad as what we dealt with yesterday afternoon and evening. we still have gusts out there of 23 in philadelphia. 38 in new york. i don't think we'll get much more damage from the winds during the day to day. there could be always the danger of a couple tree limbs that came loose yesterday falling down. that will be the biggest concern. winds in new england have gone light. you're just fine there today. breezy around washington, d.c. and baltimore and ocean city, maryland and virginia beach. again, shouldn't cause you any problems. so willie, the only last thing, it is cold. it is raw. we have seven million people without power. we need some nice warmer weather for the cleanup restoration. it doesn't look like it really moves in here in earnest

so clearly, the challenge our city faces in the coming days are enormous. the mta and con ed both have very strong leaders and extraordinarily dedicated workers. they're working extremely hard and they will continue to work around the clock to get their systems fixed. our administration will move heaven and earth to help them so we can get back up and running as quickly as humanly possible, but the damages that they face really are enormous. here is the information that we have as of this moment. regarding con ed and the mta, the most recent report has three-quarters of a million new yorkers without power. there are something like 326 buildings and 59 public housing developments without power. that's about 60,000 people in more than 26,000 apartments and many of them are in zone a. the steam system in manhattan south of 42nd street was shut down as a preventative step by con ed. that affects heating, air conditioning, ventilation systems, including many of our honts, and because they shut it down pre-emptively, wire hopeful the steam system can be restored

on the windy city. we continue to follow the blizzard conditions in parts of west virginia. nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is back with us strtracking it . >> the same storm is bringing snowfall to west virginia, and the wind gusts just to the south coast beaches of lake erie and portions through the great lakes region, we are certainly dealing with wind gusts still on the order of 30 to 40 miles per hour. the waves have been churned out. i'm getting tons of pictures sent in from lake erie especially. it's looking more like an ocean rather than just a great lake. this is a huge storm. we're also talking about those blizzard conditions back across west virginia. winds are now starting to ease a little bit, and the snow we saw across southern ohio is starting to transition back over into some rain. so it is back over to just the mountainous regions of west virginia where we have already picked up nearly 30 inches of snowfall. davis, west virginia is one of those spots that is a jackpot region for snowfall
